Purpose of the job

Develop detailed operational plans for Vessel schedules, berth allocation, and cargo handling.  Provides analysis of the services and vessel patterns as well as forecasting.Controls and plans the complete yard process to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency with due consideration to vessel and intermodal operations.   

Summary of responsibilities:

  • Oversee and maintain the development of both short- and long-term yard strategies and optimize yard operations
  • Oversee and maintain vessel planning activities, vessel schedules and berth allocation in direct correlation with yard integrity, while performing ongoing space utilization analysis
  • Oversee and maintain trains planning activities and train schedules
  • Oversee and maintain ancillary planning activities
  • Manage the cargo clearance process
  • Serve as the focal point for vessel and yard planning activities
  • Report daily to the Planning Manager and the Organization on production status, vessel schedules, yard density, equipment utilization, and strategy/allocation changes
  • Report problems and issues, particularly those of complexity or significant impact on operations. Identify and resolve daily problems and issues, typically of moderate to high complexity
  • Ensure operational efficiencies in the terminal, with responsibility for executing day-to-day operational activities and monitor and fine-tune the terminal operating system to ensure vessel, train, gate and yard planning meets strategy requirements
  • Support accurate and efficient information flow related to all vessel, train, gate and yard activities
  • Collaborate with other planning staff to set the overall yard strategy through flexible allocation
  • Prepare and communicate the daily "Game Plan" to the Organization
  • Follow all safety regulations while working in the terminal area and address individuals not complying with terminal safety regulations
  • Coach planning staff on yard, vessel, gate, and rail activities

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma plus a college degree in Logistics, Operations Management, or related discipline 
  • 3-5 years of experience in terminal operations or logistics
  • Proven experience in planning and coordinating terminal activities

Technical Skills & Knowledge Required:

  • Understands safety regulations, safe working procedures and safe materials handling procedures
  • Has familiarity with the strict implementation of international standards of safe working practices within marine, stevedoring and terminal operations
  • Must have a complete understanding of multipurpose port operations and yard handling equipment
  • Operational Management: Ability to oversee and optimize terminal operations, including yard and vessel planning
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with terminal operating systems and software
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and space utilization to maintain operational efficiency

  • Problem-Solving: Strong skills in identifying and resolving operational issues
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting and coordinating with various stakeholders
  • Leadership: Ability to manage and coach planning staff, ensuring high productivity and adherence to safety regulations
  • Customer Service: Strong focus on customer satisfaction and service excellence

Language Requirements:

  • Fluent spoken and written English is a strong plus
  • Italian is a must
